DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi Arabia detained 12 people, including two dual U.S.-Saudi citizens, in a new round of arrests in the kingdom targeting individuals supportive of women's rights and those with ties to jailed activists, people with knowledge of the apprehensions said Friday. It marks the first sweep of arrests to target individuals perceived as critics of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman since the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in October. The arrests come despite a global outcry over Khashoggi's grisly killing by Saudi agents in an operation directed by former top...

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian media are reporting that veteran film and theater actor Jamshid Mashayekhi has died at age 84. A Tuesday report by the semi-official ISNA news agency says Mashayekhi died in a hospital in Tehran after a lengthy illness. He had been occasionally hospitalized in recent years. Mashayekhi appeared in nearly 100 films and some 70 TV series and plays beginning in the late 1950s when he quit the military academy to join stage. In March, the outspoken Mashayekhi prompted an outcry when he claimed that the late Iranian wrestling hero Gholamreza Takhti committed suicide in the 1960s...

Apr 22, 2019

CAIRO — Two Egyptian actors on Wednesday denounced their country's film union for kicking them out for taking part in a public discussion in Washington that criticized proposed constitutional changes that would allow President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to stay in power until 2034. The actors — Khaled Abol Naga, also known as Kal Naga, and Amr Waked — were also accused by the union of "treason." Their membership was revoked on Tuesday. Waked said the union's decision was "nonsensical and an intervention in personal political choices." Naga said he was sorry the union had not communicated with the two before its...

"I'm very, very excited about doing 'The Music Man'," he told The Associated Press. The two-time Tony winner said he first performed the show in high school, and that it was the first musical he ever acted in. "It's amazing I'm going back to it," he said. Dubai denies there were plans for R. Kelly concert

Apr 22, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Dubai's government on Sunday forcefully denied a claim by R&B singer R. Kelly that the artist had planned concerts in the sheikhdom after he had sought permission from an Illinois judge to travel here despite facing sexual-abuse charges. In a rare statement, the government's Dubai Media Office also denied claims by his lawyer in court that Kelly had plans to meet the sheikhdom's ruling Al Maktoum family. "Authorities in Dubai have not received any request for a performance by singer R. Kelly nor are there any venues that have been booked," the statement said. It...
