JERUSALEM — Israel is rolling out the red carpet for New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who arrives next week to collect the Genesis Prize, a prestigious award dubbed by its sponsors as the "Jewish Nobel Prize." The ceremony on June 20 would mark Kraft's highest-profile public appearance since he was charged in February with soliciting a prostitute at a Florida massage parlor. He has pleaded innocent. Kraft, a longtime supporter of Jewish and Israeli causes, can expect a warm welcome during a nearly weeklong visit. In addition to collecting the $1 million award, he is scheduled to have lunch...

Turkey's Erdogan witness in footballer Mesut Ozil's wedding

Jun 17, 2019

ISTANBUL — Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was in the wedding party as Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil tied the knot on Friday. State-run Anadolu news agency said Erdogan and his wife, Emine, were legal witnesses for Ozil, who married model, actress and former Miss Turkey Amine Gulse in Istanbul. Secular Turkish weddings require a witness each for the bride and groom. Ozil, a German player of Turkish descent, quit Germany's soccer team last year after he was criticized for posing for a photograph with Erdogan before the World Cup. In his international retirement announcement, Ozil accused the German football federation,...

Libyan commander hands over prominent militant to Egypt

CAIRO — A prominent Egyptian militant wanted for scores of terror attacks in his country was handed over to Egypt on Wednesday by Libyan forces loyal to a commander pushing to take the capital of Tripoli and flown to Cairo. Egyptian TV networks aired footage of a blindfolded Hisham el-Ashmawi, a former army officer turned militant, landing in Cairo and being taken off a military plane. El-Ashmawi was captured last October in the Libyan city of Derna, a longtime bastion of Islamic militants, by commander Khalifa Hifter's self-styled Libyan National Army. Hifter's forces now are battling to take Tripoli, fighting...

People in the Middle East spend close to 58 million more hours on Facebook during Ramadan and watch more YouTube videos — everything from beauty tips and recipes to sports and TV dramas — than any other time of the year, making the holy month not only the most important one for Muslims, but also the prime time of the year for advertisers. CAIRO — The U.N. mission in Libya says two local TV reporters detained by forces loyal to a commander who is on the offensive to capture the country's capital, Tripoli, have been released after three weeks in captivity. Libya's Alahrar TV station said commander Khalifa Hifter's self-styled Libyan National Army detained two of its journalists, Mohamed al-Qarg and Mohamed al-Shibani, earlier this month.
