American Humanitarian Org in Ukraine Calls on U.S. Citizens to Come and Serve

The American Service in Ukraine launched its first recruitment drive to enlist U.S. citizens to travel to the war-torn country and serve as humanitarian volunteers

LVIV, Ukraine - July 19, 2022 - (Newswire.com)

On Monday, the American Service in Ukraine (ASIU), a non-governmental organization headquartered in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, launched its first general recruitment drive to enlist U.S. citizens to travel to the war-torn country and serve as humanitarian volunteers. The first group of volunteers will cross the Polish border into Ukraine on Sept. 15, and return on Nov. 15, after two months of service.

"We won't sugercoat it: There is a major risk for anyone who joins us," says Minnesotan Aswar Rahman, ASIU's Director, currently on a recruitment tour in the United States. "No part of Ukraine can be considered safe. But these are dangers that our Ukrainian staff members are facing every day and they need every American who is willing, able, and eager to show up and help."

All humanitarian volunteers are screened and background checked, as they will be dealing with an extremely vulnerable population. They will be met by ASIU staff at the Polish-Ukrainian border and receive training in the city of Lviv before being assigned to support one or multiple partnered organizations in western Ukraine.
