Local Business Expert Says Creating a Free Local Listing Isn’t Enough

Many small business owners have created free local business listings, but one expert says that may not be enough.

As scores of small and local business owners across the country rush to create free local business listings, one local marketing expert is sounding the alarm.

“It’s not enough to simply create a small business listing,” says a spokesman from FindUsLocal.com, a free online local business directory that uses GEO technology to create a customized home page for its visitors. “Unless the local listing is created correctly, it may do more harm than good to the businesses search engine rankings.”

He’s talking about how the search engine spiders find and organize citations across the web for each local listing. “If you list your business name as American Widgets, Inc. on one local business directory and then leave out the “Inc.” on another, it will confuse the search engine spiders and may result in none of the citations being attributed to your business.

Think of it this way. The search engine bots only understand what they see in the local listings, and unless they are exactly the same, they won’t be considered a match.

“That’s a problem,” he says, “Because in order to develop an effective local marketing campaign, business owners need as many free online business listings as they can manage. But if they’re not being attributed to their business because of a misspelling or the leaving out of a small word, all their work in creating the listings would have been for nothing.”

He recommends creating a sample listing before actually creating any real small business listings and then following it to a T when submitting them.
