The No-Contract Agency Cleaning Up The Auckland SEO Industry

For years, long-term contracts have been the norm in the Auckland SEO industry. One company is on a mission to change that – for the benefit of clients.

There’s a new kid on the block in the often-shady world of search engine optimization agencies. For years, the typical agency model has been to sign clients up for a 6- or 12-month contract, on the premise that this is the time required to achieve a result. Upstart Premium SEO Auckland is turning this model on its head, doing away with setup fees and term contracts, arguing this no-contract model is in the client’s best interests.

“It’s true, SEO does take time,” says Tom McSherry, owner and founder of Premium SEO. “The problem is that this makes it a perfect market for charlatans. There are a ton of operators selling long term month contracts and promising the moon – and then doing nothing to actually move the client’s rankings. By the time the client realizes they’ve been duped, it’s too late – they have to finish the contract, or pay break fees.”

This model has been in the interests of agencies, McSherry argues, but out of alignment with what clients need and want. There has long been a disconnect between what benefits the agencies and what works best for their clients. Often, there is a large asymmetry of information involved - clients don’t have the level of understanding of SEO needed to know whether or not they’re getting a good deal.

“It’s like sharebrokers in the 80s – where are the customers’ yachts?” he said. "The salespeople are getting paid, the agencies are getting paid, and often the client is the only one not making any money."

“At the end of the day, if you’re any good at this stuff, you don’t need to put clients on contract. They will stay because they’re getting a result,” McSherry said. “Long contracts are designed for agencies with big sales teams. Often the salesperson is far removed from ops, and only half-understands what they’re selling. They’ll say whatever they need to say to get the signature, and after that they don’t care.”
